GMO Internet : Japan`s GMO Internet unveils bitcoin mining machine

06/09/2018 | 12:42pm CEST

Japanese internet service company GMO Internet has begun selling a machine designed especially for virtual currency mining and equipped with fast 7 nanometer chips.

The device, called GMO Miner B2, lowers operating costs to a fraction of those offered by competing devices, according to the company. It will start shipping the machines by the end of October.

Using the 7nm semiconductors lowers operating costs for virtual currency miners to one-fifty-fifth that of competing devices, GMO Internet said. Switzerland, GMO`s sales unit based in Zug, Switzerland, is marketing the product.

GMO entered the mining business in December, setting up mining centers in Scandinavia to save on server cooling costs. It has around 20,000 machines already in operation. The company sells and rents GMO Miner B2s installed with its specially designed chips.

The machines are optimized for mining bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash, a variant of the cryptocurrency. They sell for around $2,000 each, with the price varying from month to month. The machines have a hash rate — a measure of the unit`s calculating speed — of 24 trillion “hashes” per second.

GMO Miner B2s cut power consumption by connecting up to 32 machines at a time. That reduces the space needed for equipment and the time required to mine coins by about half compared with conventional servers.

Bitmain Technologies, based in Beijing, dominates the global market for bitcoin mining by taking advantage of low electricity prices. Masatoshi Kumagai, GMO`s founder and CEO, said bitcoin mining is not as decentralized as the creators of blockchain technology had hoped.
